The keys to female more top cycling in 2023

Professional female cycling continues to grow. In 2023, the UCI Worldtour calendar arrives more loaded than ever. No less than 86 days of competition distributed in 30 tests. Without a doubt, the most challenging season since this female circuit began its journey, back in 2016. The season comes with important novelties. And the first of them coincides precisely with the race that opens the calendar: the Tour Down Under (from January 15 to 17). This is the most important test that has been played in Australia since 2016, which this year debuts in the highest category. Shortly after, the great novelty of the circuit arrives: the premiere of the UAE Tour (from February 9 to 12). A new four -stage race, which is disputed in parallel with its male version. It is not the first time that the female squad competes in the Middle East. It is possible that the Qatar tour sounds, already missing. Already in Europe, two other tests rise in category and are also integrated into the WorldTour 2023 calendar: the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the Tour of Switzerland. The first of them opens the Calendar of Spring, where the Tour de Flandes and the Paris-Roubaix Femmes will shine with their own light. It will be before the Triptico de las Ardenas, which will put the definitive brooch in April (Amstel Gold Race, Flecha-Valona and Lieja-Bastogne-Lieja). A month marked by Spanish races and, especially, by the return, which is no longer disputed in September and arrives with important changes. With seven days of competition, it becomes the longest female race, behind the Tour of Italy (10) and the Tour de France (8). The great protagonists of the summer will be precisely the Italian and French evidence. The two most important calendar events arrive in July, shortly after the Switzerland tour, which, as we have already pointed out, upload this year of category and integrates among the Top Top tests of the calendar. With hardly any margin for rest, the World Cycling Championships arrive (from August 3 to 13), which are held in Scotland. While it is not a WorldTour test itself, it does condition the season. Especially, taking into account the advancement of dates in 2023: it is disputed in August, instead of September, as usual.

Keys to understand how the women's Worldtour circuit works

There are 15 teams that have WorldTour license, which receive automatic invitation to participate in the best tests of the calendar. In this sense, the team classification has been dominated in recent years by the SD Worx (previously Boels Dolmans), which has won the classification in 6 of the last 7 seasons, including 2022. Trek-Segafredo has only been able to break your reign in recent years (2020). In addition to these teams, the three best in the continental category (Second Division) also receive their automatic invitation. From here, each organizer is free to invite more teams, to complete a maximum of 24 squads, the maximum allowed in the WorldTour tests. In tests in stages of up to five days, the organizer can set a maximum of 6 or 7. in turns of six or more, seven cyclists, in addition to two equipment support vehicles. As for the points that are granted in each test, they are distributed among the 40 best classified, with a certain scale. The first obtains 400 points; the second, 320; the third, 260; And so on, up to a minimum of 8 points for the runners between stalls 31 and 40. In stages or counterreloj team tests, this scale is applied in the same way, with the particularity that in the end all points obtained by the team are added and divided between the participating cyclists Another peculiarity is that carrying the leader's jersey in a stages test entails, by default, obtaining 8 points per stage. In 2022, Van Vleuten (Movistar Team) was proclaimed winner of the WorldTour circuit, obtaining 3,589 points, far ahead of Elisa Long Borghini (Trek-Segafredo), second with 2,710 points, and Demi Vollering (SD Worx), third in discord with 2,681 points.
