Routes for mountain biking in the province of Toledo

Rutas para salir en bicicleta de montaña en la provincia de Toledo

This province of Castilla-La Mancha makes the most of its natural surroundings to offer a wide variety of fun routes, perfect for enjoying on two wheels. Whether you prefer dirt trails with your mountain bike, or paved, scenic routes with your road bike, Toledo has options for every type of cyclist.

Nestled in the Tagus valley, between the Gredos mountains and the Montes de Toledo, the province features perfectly rideable routes with moderate technical difficulty. Many of these routes cross well-preserved Mediterranean woodland areas, ideal for mountain biking, while others run along quiet secondary roads that delight road cycling enthusiasts, with open Castilian landscapes and towns full of history.

The best time to explore its trails is in autumn or spring, as winter and summer in Toledo usually bring extreme temperatures. Planning your schedule well is key to fully enjoying both technical MTB outings and long days on the road bike under the Castilian sun.

In addition to its natural surroundings, Toledo stands out for its cultural and historical richness. It's worth making a stop in the capital, known as the City of Three Cultures, as well as in charming spots such as Talavera de la Reina, or in villages of the Mancha in Toledo like Consuegra, famous for its windmills, and Tembleque, with its unique porticoed main square.

Vía Verde de la Jara

The Vía Verde de la Jara is one of the most important railway routes converted into paths for hiking and mountain biking in central Spain. It runs through the Jara region of Toledo, in the west of the province, along part of the route of the old railway line built between Talavera de La Reina and Villanueva de la Serena at the beginning of the 20th century. The line saw little use and was abandoned after the Civil War. Its numerous viaducts (up to 7) and tunnels (18) are the characteristic features of this route, which crosses Castilian plains and farmland at its start. The second section of the Vía Verde is more rugged, due to its proximity to the Montes de Toledo. Nevertheless, the route is manageable and there are no significant technical difficulties.

Fraile Green Route

At the foot of the Montes de Toledo, in the town of Sonseca, this mountain bike route begins, which is part of a cycling tour called Vereda del Fraile. The Vereda del Fraile is a trail that runs along the northern slope of the Sierra del Castañar. A narrow singletrack through shrubs, very popular among local bikers, which reveals the Mediterranean landscape of this southern area of the province. It is recommended to do this route outside the summer season due to high temperatures and also outside hunting season, as part of the route is often temporarily closed for local hunting events.

Becerras Route

In the south of the province, within the municipality of Los Navalucillos, is the area of Las Becerras, part of which is included in the Cabañeros National Park. A protected area of high scenic value, with a large forest area (mostly pine forests) and nearby very attractive hiking routes such as Rocigalgo or El Chorro, which includes a beautiful waterfall nestled among rocks and forests of holly or birch trees. This mountain bike route is marathon-style, with three tough climbs (although along well-maintained forest tracks) from which you will get the best views of the wettest and most wooded area of Cabañeros. A green oasis within the dry and flat province of Toledo.
