The Best Mountain Bike Routes in Huesca: Unique Adventures and Landscapes

Las Mejores Rutas en Bicicleta de Montaña en Huesca: Aventuras y Paisajes Únicos

Huesca is one of the must-visit cycling destinations in Spain, offering a wide variety of routes for both mountain bikes and road bikes. Thanks to various public and private initiatives, as well as the efforts of cycling groups and local clubs, numerous cycling itineraries have been developed for all levels, promoting bicycle tourism and revitalizing different regions.

A standout example is the work of Zona Zero Pirineos, a project that has managed to transform the Sobrarbe region, improving and adapting trails and routes to make it a reference destination for MTB enthusiasts. This initiative has boosted cycling tourism in the area, offering services tailored to those looking to experience riding mountain trails in an impressive natural setting.

But Huesca is not just a paradise for mountain biking. The province has unique cities, towns, and landscapes that also make it an ideal destination for those who enjoy road bikes. From the arid landscapes of the Los Monegros desert in the south to the imposing peaks of the Pyrenees, with the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park as its main attraction, the options for riding on asphalt are endless.

If you're looking for adventure on two wheels, we present four MTB routes that perfectly showcase the diversity of trails Huesca offers. Whether you prefer challenging high-mountain trails or long routes along scenic roads, this province is a destination that leaves no cyclist indifferent.

Mallos de Riglos Route

The Mallos de Riglos are imposing rock formations in the form of vertical walls that dominate the village of Riglos and the entire Hoya de Huesca region, in the Pre-Pyrenees of Huesca. A pure mountain bike route with spectacular views of the Mallos, as well as a visit to Loarre and its famous Romanesque castle-fortress.

Zona Zero Pyrenees Route

The Zona Zero BTT center in the town of Aínsa is a unique cycling center in Spain. Its managers have taken care to condition and maintain all the trails, paths, and tracks in the region for the enjoyment of bikers coming from all over Spain. In addition, it has hosted one of the rounds of the Enduro World Series, the most important enduro competition in the world, for several years. Among the numerous MTB routes in the Zona Zero Pyrenees, we suggest a spectacular circular enduro route around Aínsa, with a moderate to high level of difficulty, ideal for experienced riders hungry for adrenaline. The route links three dizzying descents over mixed terrain, from sandstone to marl, that will test your technical skills.

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Type: Enduro
  • Distance: 20.7 kilometers
  • Elevation gain: 771 meters
  • Route type: Circular

Route 13 Castles of Huesca

A very attractive XC Marathon route that connects thirteen castles in the Hoya de Huesca region, starting and ending in the provincial capital. Some of these castles are Castejón, Algas, Figueruelas, Torresecas, and Alto de San Juan. The first part of the route is more of a leg-breaker, although most of the roads and trails are in good condition.

Ruta de los Tozales

To the south of the province of Huesca lies part of the Monegros desert, whose rugged landscape and rock formations sculpted by erosion create a unique environment that reminds us of the famous rock monuments of the American West. Starting and finishing in Castejón de Monegros, this route runs along well-maintained roads and tracks. Most of the route is favorable and fast to ride. But the last 15 kilometers, with the climb to the San Miguel quarry, will be tough after almost three hours of MTB riding. We recommend doing this route outside the summer season due to the high temperatures in the area.

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Type: XC Marathon
  • Distance: 57.8 kilometers
  • Elevation gain: 517 meters
  • Route type: Circular
  • Start/finish: Castejón de Monegros
