Routes for mountain biking in the province of Gipuzkoa

Rutas para salir en bicicleta de montaña en la provincia de Guipúzcoa

Guipúzcoa is an ideal destination both for mountain bike enthusiasts and for lovers of road bikes. Its green landscapes, peaceful mountains, and endless trails make this province a paradise for any cycling discipline. From challenging mountain bike routes in the beech forests of Pagoeta to winding roads with stunning views of the Cantabrian Sea, Guipúzcoa offers routes for all levels and styles.

With only 1,997 km², it is the smallest province in Spain, but its diversity of terrain and elevation changes make it a true "leg-breaker" for those seeking cycling challenges. On the road, the coast of San Sebastián offers spectacular routes that combine demanding climbs with panoramic descents, while the interior, with the Goierri area, features mountain passes perfect for endurance training. Meanwhile, the technical trails of Zarautz and Aia are ideal for enjoying MTB at its finest.

If you decide to explore Guipúzcoa by bike, it is advisable to always bring a rain jacket. Its oceanic climate guarantees mild temperatures throughout the year, but also frequent rains that can catch you by surprise in the middle of a ride. Whether mountain biking through lush forests or road cycling along its scenic roads, every pedal stroke in Guipúzcoa promises a unique experience in an unparalleled setting.

El Goierri Route

Accessible circular route through one of the most beautiful regions of Guipúzcoa, the most significant example of rural Euskadi landscapes. It passes through some of the most important villages of the Goierri (Ordizia, Lazkao, Ataún, etc.), in the south of the province, and includes some of the highest mountains in the Basque Country (Sierra de Aralar and Aizkorri).

San Sebastián - Jaizkibel

We now travel to the coast of Gipuzkoa to explore one of the areas where cycling is in the air, that of Mount Jaizkibel, located halfway between San Sebastián and Hondarribia, close to the border between Spain and France. This demanding MTB route tackles the ascent of Jaizkibel from the Lezo side, offering unique views of the Cantabrian Sea and the green landscapes of the Basque coast. The route includes in its second part the descent along the ridge of the mountain, with very fun and technical singletracks that require a certain level of bike handling skills. Some sections are on the road, but the trails and descents of Jaizkibel make you forget these dull stretches of asphalt.

Pagoeta Natural Park Route

We move further west, south of Zarautz, to cycle through one of the most attractive rural areas of Gipuzkoa, the beech forests of Pagoeta Natural Park. On this short but leg-breaking route through the park’s surroundings, we will ride along beautiful trails through lush beech forests, high grazing lands, and charming rural paths dotted with typical Basque farmhouses, where you can breathe in nature and tranquility.
