Descubre las mejores rutas en MTB para explorar la provincia de Málaga

The province of Málaga is one of the most mountainous in southern Spain, making it an ideal destination for cycling enthusiasts. In just a few kilometers, it is possible to climb more than 1,000 meters of elevation from the coast to mountain ranges such as Grazalema or Las Nieves, a perfect challenge for both mountain bike lovers and road cycling fans.

Mountain bikers will find iconic routes in Málaga such as the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, as well as countless trails in the hills near the city. Towns like Ojén, very close to Marbella, have taken advantage of the popularity of mountain biking, organizing enduro events such as the Big Ride or Endurama and keeping tracks and trails in optimal condition for adrenaline-filled descents.

On the other hand, road bike enthusiasts also have a cycling paradise in Málaga, with demanding mountain passes and roads that wind through spectacular landscapes. The routes that climb from the coast to the interior offer challenging elevation gains and rides with breathtaking views, perfect for demanding training or simply to enjoy an unforgettable ride.

Montes de Málaga Route

To escape the bustling city of Málaga, there is nothing better than doing so in the protected area of the Montes de Málaga, just 5 kilometers from the provincial capital. A true green lung of the city that can be fully explored via its perfectly maintained forest tracks, suitable for both MTB and hiking. You can find large expanses of pine forest, holm oaks, and fruit tree crops. From Málaga, you overcome a significant elevation gain of 1,500 meters in approximately 50 kilometers, so you need to be in good shape to avoid suffering on this challenging route.

Desfiladero de los Gaitanes

We venture into the interior of the province to tackle an attractive marathon-type mountain bike route in Ardales, the village closest to the Gaitanes Gorge, where the famous Caminito del Rey is located. It is not possible to access this impressive gorge on the Guadalhorce river by bike, but we will explore its surroundings by bicycle, including the spectacular viewpoint of the three reservoirs found in the area: Conde de Guadalhorce, Guadalteba, and Guadalhorce, practically separated by a large dam.

Enduro route in Ojén

The white village of Ojén, just 8 kilometers from Marbella, has been the setting for some of the best national and international level enduro events. Its rugged mountains and trails are the escape route for Malaga riders and many others from elsewhere. This short but tough enduro route consists of three descents, with lengths of 1.8 km, 0.6 km, and 1.5 kilometers respectively, linked by uphill and flat sections. The final climb of 2.3 kilometers is the hardest part of the route, gaining more than 150 meters of elevation.
