Routes for mountain biking in the province of Cáceres

Rutas para salir en bicicleta de montaña en la provincia de Cáceres

Cáceres is a province that combines an incredible diversity of landscapes and terrains with cities and towns full of history and charm. It is a perfect destination for cycle tourism, whether by mountain bike or road bike. Throughout the province, part of the famous Ruta de la Plata passes through, with well-marked green itineraries and specific MTB routes to explore in one or several days.

If you are a mountain biking enthusiast, Monfragüe National Park offers a spectacular setting with trails through Mediterranean forests and one of the largest vulture reserves in Europe. You can also venture into the Sierra de las Villuercas, a mountainous terrain ideal for enjoying technical and demanding routes on two wheels. On the other hand, the regions of Las Hurdes and La Vera have kilometers of trails in the heart of the mountains, perfect for exploring by mountain bike, with impressive views and a unique natural environment.

For those who prefer road bikes, Cáceres offers asphalt routes that connect towns with great cultural heritage, such as Guadalupe, Plasencia, or Hervás. These routes allow you to enjoy quiet roads with spectacular landscapes, ideal for training or simply the pleasure of riding through rural environments full of history.

Whether you are looking for adrenaline on technical mountain trails or you prefer long scenic routes on the road, Cáceres is a destination that offers the best of both worlds for cyclists.

Route through the Heart of Las Villuercas

Accessible route but with several tough climbs, starting and ending in Guadalupe. This route we recommend is the long course of the second edition of the event Route through the Heart of Las Villuercas, held in 2018. From the tourist town of Guadalupe, where you can visit the Royal Monastery of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a circular route is taken through the mountainous surroundings of the town, the Sierra de Villuercas. The best example of the Extremaduran mountain, with its cork oaks, holm oaks, dehesas, and a large amount of wildlife: deer, wild boar, and even Iberian lynxes.

Vía Verde de la Plata Route

The Vía Verde de la Plata is one of the most attractive signposted mountain biking routes you can do in Cáceres. In addition, it is quite accessible both physically and technically. It is located in the north of the province and crosses from Casas del Monte across the Extremadura border with Castilla y León to end in the Salamanca municipality of Navalmoral de Béjar. The route goes through the Ambroz Valley, full of lush forests, and passes through an old railway tunnel between Baños de Montemayor and Puerto de Béjar, adapted for cyclists and hikers. A unique opportunity to discover the landscapes of the Sierra de Hervás and Béjar.

Tour of Monfragüe Park

We suggest a two-stage route that covers part of the Monfragüe National Park, a reserve of high scenic and wildlife value that is home to one of the largest concentrations of birds of prey in the entire Iberian Peninsula. The route is divided into two stages, although it can be done in one day if you are in great physical shape. In total, you will cover 100 kilometers starting and finishing in Torrejón el Rubio at the gates of the National Park. You will go through the characteristic gorges and jumps over the Tagus and Tiétar rivers, the local dehesas, and villages such as Villarreal de San Carlos and the reservoirs of Torrejón el Rubio, La Vid, and Los Cañas. This is one of the most Instagrammable mountain bike routes in Spain—every few kilometers you'll want to stop and take photos with your phone.
