How to choose your bike size?
Choosing the right bike size is as important as choosing the right sports shoe size. Using a size larger or smaller than you need will make you uncomfortable and, in some cases, force you into an awkward position that could lead to injuries.
Not all brands use the same criteria, which is why one of the most common questions when buying a bike, whether it’s a road, mountain, or triathlon bike, is knowing how to choose the correct size. Some manufacturers indicate the bike size in alphabetical code, following the same system as clothing sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL. But others use a numerical system: 52, 54, 56, etc.
The size of a bike is determined by the length of the vertical tube of the frame, which connects the bottom bracket to the seat post. In the case of mountain bikes, this measurement is usually given in inches, while in road and time trial bikes it is given in centimeters.
How to calculate the correct bike size?
To find out the bike size that best fits you, you need to know your inseam height. The inseam height is the best indicator for calculating the correct bike size for most people. But don’t forget that the result is indicative, as the relationship between leg and torso length can vary from person to person, as well as the length of the forearms. For a more specific fit, we recommend having a biomechanical study done with experts.
How to calculate the size for a mountain bike:
Stand up straight with your leg straight and barefoot. Measure the distance between the floor and your groin (in cm). Multiply your inseam height by 0.21.
How to calculate the size for a road bike or gravel:
Stand up straight with your leg straight and barefoot. Measure the distance between the floor and your groin (in cm). Multiply your inseam height by 0.65.
How to calculate the size for a time trial or triathlon bike:
In time trial or Time Trial bikes, the frame geometry is different and the position on the bike changes compared to a road bike. It may be advisable to choose a frame size between 2 and 4 centimeters smaller than what corresponds to your height and leg length. For example, if your size calculation gives you a value of 54, choose a size 52.
How to calculate the correct bike size?
Sometimes when making the calculation, the result may fall between two sizes. For example: 53.4 cm or 17.6”. In these cases, there are two criteria to choose the correct size.
