Welcome to the world of semi-fat bikes; this is what 27.5" Plus wheels are like

Bienvenidos al mundo de las semi-fat bikes; así son las ruedas 27,5" Plus

If we thought that with 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels all the options in the cycling world were already covered, we were wrong. A new variant has emerged that is catching the attention of mountain bike riders: the 27.5" plus wheels.

More than a new size, it is an evolution of the 27.5”, which, having a greater width, reach the size of 29”, but keeping a rim of the immediately lower standard. These wheels use the well-known 650B size, but with a wider tire, placing them in an intermediate point between fatbikes and conventional 27.5” wheels. For this reason, in some circles they are called semi-fat or mid-fat.

Although in some cases it is possible to install these wheels on 27.5” or 29” frames, it seems that manufacturers are already designing specific components and frames to optimize their performance. This involves the creation of wider forks, reinforced hubs, and rims with a wider internal width (starting from 40 mm), capable of accommodating tires with widths around 3.0”. These dimensions achieve a diameter similar to 29” wheels, but with a greater air volume, which improves impact absorption and grip on rough terrain.

The main drivers of this new format are manufacturers such as Rocky Mountain and WTB, although leading brands such as Trek They have also shown interest in developing specific models with this technology. Since the arrival and consolidation of the mountain bikes with 29” wheels, the market has continued to innovate, offering options for all types of cyclists.

Meanwhile, road cycling enthusiasts of road bikes watch these innovations in the world of MTB with curiosity, wondering if there will be future adaptations that could benefit their discipline. The industry continues to evolve, and we cyclists remain expectant. What will come next?
