How bicycles help recycling in Lagos, Nigeria
In addition to providing a healthy lifestyle, getting around by bicycle has a positive impact on the environment by reducing CO2 emissions in urban transport.
One company has gone further in using bicycles for sustainability, combining cycling with recycling. The Wecyclers project, launched in 2012, has managed to make bicycles not only reduce polluting gas emissions, but also increase the collection and recycling of waste in Nigeria.
Modified bicycles for efficient recycling
Wecyclers employs more than 75 people, 25 of whom ride the streets of Lagos with specially modified bicycles. These bicycles are equipped with trailers adapted to collect recyclable waste like plastics, glass, and containers directly from households. This collection takes place at the homes of more than 6,500 families subscribed to the service, who earn points for every kilo of waste delivered. These points can be exchanged for food or other basic necessities.

The environmental impact of bicycles on recycling
Since its launch, the project has recycled more than 600 tons of trash, preventing thousands of tons of waste from ending up in landfills. In turn, it is estimated that this collection system could soon reach more than 1 million families across Nigeria, promoting a culture of recycling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this case, the bicycle not only promotes sustainable transport, but is also part of a key solution for waste management.
The double contribution of the bicycle to the environment
Wecyclers demonstrates how the bicycle can fulfill a double environmental function: not only does it contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, but it also boosts recycling in urban areas with limited infrastructure. This project has become an inspiring example of how a simple change in the use of transport can have a major impact on sustainability.
