Routes for mountain biking in the province of Burgos

Rutas para salir en bicicleta de montaña en la provincia de Burgos

Burgos is one of the most touristic provinces in Castilla y León, an ideal destination both for lovers of cycle tourism on mountain bikes and for those who enjoy covering long distances on road bikes. With a unique combination of history and nature, this region offers landscapes ranging from the vast Castilian plain to the green meadows reminiscent of neighboring communities such as Cantabria and the Basque Country.

Its location makes Burgos a transitional territory between the two main climates of the Iberian Peninsula: the Mediterranean and the oceanic. This climatic diversity is reflected in its cycling routes, which allow you to enjoy rides on asphalt with panoramic views or venture onto technical trails perfect for MTB.

We propose three routes that perfectly represent this variety of landscapes and climates, combining nature with must-see historic sites, such as the city of Burgos and the emblematic Sierra de Atapuerca. Whether you prefer the adrenaline of dirt paths on a mountain bike, or you enjoy road cycling through charming villages, Burgos is a destination that has it all.

Burgos - Atapuerca

A route full of history that starts next to the Museum of Human Evolution in the provincial capital and heads east towards the famous site where the oldest hominid remains in Europe were found. The route is quite manageable both physically and technically, with only one significant climb in the Sierra de Atapuerca, about halfway through. In total, you cover 50.8 km along tracks and trails across the pure Castilian plain. In addition, both the departure and arrival in the monumental city of Burgos are another attraction of this MTB route that takes us back to the origins of mankind.

Greenway of the Sierra de la Demanda

We suggest this marked route of the Greenway of the Sierra de la Demanda. A linear route of 55 km that connects the towns of Alanzón and Monterrubio de la Demanda. It follows the path of an old mining railway from the late 19th century that was abandoned and out of use and has now been restored as a greenway for hiking and mountain biking. The route can be completed in a single day or split into two stages, with an intermediate stop in Pineda de la Sierra at kilometer 25. This makes it much more accessible if you do it with family or friends who may not be in top physical shape but still want to enjoy a natural environment of great value. Lush forests of pine, oak, and beech trees and small but beautiful villages dot this interesting cycling route.

Las Merindades Route

Las Merindades is a beautiful region located in the north of the province of Burgos, known for its charming mountain villages and green mountains. Its landscape marks the transition line between the Atlantic climate of Cantabria and the Mediterranean climate of the Castilian plateau. This route starts and ends in the town of Espinosa de los Monteros, from where you head south to climb Pico Bedón, which is 1,092 meters high. From its summit, you can enjoy beautiful views of the region's green fields. It is recommended to do the route in spring or summer, when you can enjoy pleasant temperatures, perfect for MTB riding.
