Orbea Gain Carbon: the pioneer
The Orbea Gain was one of the first road e-bikes with a design far removed from the bulky look that has traditionally characterized electric bikes. A big advantage is the number of models available: one of the most extensive ranges on the market. But in this case, we are going to focus on its carbon version. In 2021, Orbea launched an update of the frame and specifications taken from its aero OMX model. The wheelbase was increased by 40 mm, cables were routed internally, and the weight was reduced to below 11.8 kg.
The result, a very well-integrated design. Its goal was to manufacture an electric-assist bike with as sporty an appearance as possible, and we can attest that it has succeeded. Especially in its latest version: the Carbon M10.
The Gain always has the front and rear lights on. It is a machine with smooth handling, even with the motor off. According to the manufacturer, the power delivery has been adjusted so that the sensation is very similar to riding a bike without a motor. The clean lines are one of the most outstanding features. A subtle button mounted on the superior tube, next to the head tube, allows you to change modes, although there are also options for controls mounted on the handlebar. The charging port is just above the bottom bracket, the battery is stealthily hidden in the down tube, and there is the option to purchase the Range Extender: a charger that installs in the bottle cage as if it were a water bottle and allows you to extend the bike's range. The motor is located in the rear hub and is really hard to spot at first glance. Orbea has chosen to use the Ebikemotion X35 plus 250W throughout the range. It is activated by a cadence sensor next to the hub itself. An app allows you to configure and control the system, as well as obtain information about your activity, upload GPS routes, and other features. The Gain Carbon range varies between 11 and 13 kg, depending on the specifications.
The wiring is minimalist and mostly internal. It comes with four possible builds: The Gain M30 (Shimano 105), the M20 (Ultegra R8000), the M20i (already with Di2 components), and the M10 (with Dura-Ace components). The entire range is fitted with Mavic Aksium Elite Disc UST wheels, except for the M10, which comes with Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon Disc UST. Trek Domane+ SLR: featherweight
The lightest electric road bike ever created by Trek. There you have it. The Trek Domane+ SLR is the latest electric road bike from the American brand. It is available in six different builds. The models equipped with SRAM come with 40 mm tires, which are the standard on Gravel bikes. All of them share the Trek OCLV Series 800 carbon frame. Light? Super light!
The top-of-the-range model comes in at under 12 kg, featuring a very compact motor located in the bottom bracket and a 360 Wh battery. All from the German firm TQ. The result is a supersmooth and surprisingly quiet electric riding experience. The characteristic rear IsoSpeed from Trek, whose mission is to absorb the road's irregularities, adds to the ride comfort. The Domane+ SLR is lighter than the Trek Domane LT, a step below, and features a slightly less aggressive geometry. Unlike the latter, the battery is not removable.
The manufacturer estimates a range of 100 km in eco mode and the battery fully charges in 2.5 hours. There is an option to extend the assistance thanks to the range extender, which is sold separately for about 600 euros. It is installed in the seat tube's bottle cage mount. An LCD screen is perfectly integrated into the superior tube. Likewise, the mode buttons have been integrated into the shift levers. Everything contributes to making the bike feel like a conventional model.
