About Giant
Giant was the manufacturer that changed bike geometry forever when it introduced sloping to its frames in the 1990s.
Giant is one of the bicycle brands that has contributed most to the globalization of the market. This Taiwanese manufacturer played a very important role in the cycling boom of the 1970s, when the industry ceased to be centered in Europe to make the leap to other continents.
Giant played a key role in this globalization of the bicycle, establishing itself as one of the most highly regarded brands in the manufacture of frames for both road and mountain bikes.
Today, Giant is a giant whose bicycles enjoy widespread popularity and are appreciated by millions of cyclists, both professionals and amateurs around the world. Their mere mention is synonymous with quality, with a wide and well-stocked range of models. Some of them could well be in the museum of bicycle history, such as the revolutionary MCR Team and its inspiring frame.
The price-quality ratio of Giant bicycles, with high-level assemblies at affordable costs, has earned it the recognition of experts. This manufacturer is especially valued for its know-how to take advantage of so many years of experience in the manufacture of frames, continually incorporating technological improvements and innovations in its range of bicycles.
One of the main characteristics of Giant mountain bikes is the high resistance offered by their frames to the accumulation of kilometers and rides, combining design and high durability of materials.
Giant road bikes were distinguished from the start by their sloping top tube, which helped change frame geometries throughout the industry. The first sloping frames came to market from Giant in the 1990s. In 1998, the ONCE team became the first professional team to use them in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a EspaƱa.
This innovation has been a hallmark of Giant for years, opening the door to more compact and stiffer bicycle frames, providing not only weight reduction but also greater maneuverability.
Giant's origins are in Southeast Asia. In 1972 King Liu planted the seed for the company in Taiwan, anticipating the boom that would later come from that part of the globe for the bicycle world.
Giant was a modest company in its early days. It started with $100,000 in capital, a figure that more than forty years later has ballooned to over $1 billion. More than 5 million bicycles leave the Giant factory each year. It even produces frames for other brands.
Through this work for other brands, Giant ended up taking over the legendary Schwinn, considered in the 1970s to be the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. On its way with the American firm, Giant managed to get rid of the exclusivity of the made in Taiwan, demonstrating that there was quality in the finishes and projection in the future.
Years later, the Netherlands would be its gateway to the European orchard, the key to making the brand global. A necessity that also came about in competitive cycling. What was initially a cooperation with the Australian Institute of Sport to improve the range of mountain bikes, was consolidated by close collaboration with the ONCE team.
With the yellow team, big names like Laurent Jalabert, Alex Zulle and Johan Bruyneel made Giant's name known in the most traditional spheres of European cycling. Giant's roots in the Netherlands are reflected in its collaboration with the country's leading team, Rabobank, a great institution in Dutch cycling that went on to win several Grand Tours with Denis Menchov as team leader.
Giant is currently considered the world's leading manufacturer in the cycling industry. At Tuvalum you can find a wide range of Giant bikes for touring, mountain biking and triathlon.
